# City-Specific Messaging Angles — Multi-City Expansion

**Directive:** Michael — RateRight going NATIONAL from launch. All of Australia, not city-by-city.
**Created:** 2026-02-20 | **Updated:** 2026-02-20 (national pivot)
**Status:** 🟡 Draft — needs Michael approval before any external use

> **STRATEGY CHANGE (2026-02-20):** No more phased rollout. National from day one.
> Go-to-market: hostel flyers in every capital city to seed workers, then cold email
> contractors per city once supply builds. Budget $2K. Reason: construction word of
> mouth is cross-city — contractors tell mates in OTHER cities, not local competitors.

---

## Core Message (All Cities)

The foundation doesn't change. $50 flat. Workers keep 100%. No markup. What changes is the *local proof point* — the project they drive past, the shortage they feel, the agency they're sick of.

---

## Sydney (Current — Refine)

**What they feel:** Western Sydney is booming but the margins are getting crushed. Agencies are leeching 20-40% on every hire while sitting in Parramatta offices.

**Key projects to reference:**
- Western Sydney Airport ($5.3B) — "Every tradie heading to Badgerys Creek is losing thousands to agencies"
- Metro West ($11.5B) — massive labour demand
- Powerhouse Parramatta ($1.4B)

**Local language:** Parramatta, Western Sydney, "out west", Central Station, smoko

**Hostel angle:** Surry Hills, Kings Cross, CBD — biggest WHV backpacker population in the country

**Sample hook:**
> "There's $18 billion in projects going up across Western Sydney right now. And agencies are taking 25% of every worker they place on them. That's not a fee — that's a tax on your business."

---

## Newcastle (NEW — Phase 1)

**What they feel:** Newcastle is booming but still gets treated like Sydney's little brother. The big agencies focus on Sydney CBD. Newcastle builders either pay through the nose for Sydney-based recruiters or scramble to find workers locally. No construction-specific marketplace serves the Hunter — it's wide open.

**Key data (from Radar intel):**
- 330,000 people being added to Hunter-Central Coast over 25 years
- 151 estates in active development (OpenLot, Feb 2026)
- Cost escalation: 5.5% (2025), moderating to 4.3-5.0% (2026-27)
- 1,150-2,000 construction jobs listed across platforms
- 68% of regional builders considering scaling back (HIA 2026) — cost pressure is real
- Part of NSW's $118.3B infrastructure commitment over 4 years

**Key angles:**
- Hunter Valley regional construction boom — sports precinct, affordable housing, 151 estates
- "Not Sydney prices, but Sydney agency markups" — the unfairness angle
- Regional builders are MORE price-sensitive (smaller margins) — $50 flat is even more compelling
- No construction-specific marketplace in the region — RateRight = first mover
- Precast operations (Tomago, Mascot areas)

**Competitive landscape:** Labour hire dominated (Employ Me Labour Hire prominent). HiPages/Airtasker cover it but are Sydney-centric generalists. **No construction-specific platform.** Wide open.

**Local language:** The Hunter, Newy, Nobbys, "up the road from Sydney", Hamilton, Tomago, Cessnock, Huntlee

**Hostel angle:** Newcastle Beach, Hamilton — smaller but growing WHV scene. Workers who want construction work without Sydney rent.

**Sample hook:**
> "You're running a crew in the Hunter. You need two steelfixers. The agency in Sydney quotes you 25% — same as if you were building in the CBD. You're not. You're in Newy. And you shouldn't be paying CBD prices for workers who'd rather be here anyway."

**Sample hook (data-driven):**
> "330,000 people moving to the Hunter over the next 25 years. 151 estates already in development. And the only way to find a steelfixer is through an agency taking 25% of their wage. Not anymore."

**Sample hook (worker-side):**
> "Newcastle rent: half of Sydney. Newcastle construction: booming. Newcastle agency fees: still bloody ridiculous. RateRight. $50. Once. Keep your full rate."

---

## Melbourne (NEW — Phase 1)

**What they feel:** Melbourne has the biggest infrastructure pipeline in the country and the worst labour shortage. Metro Tunnel alone is 7,000 jobs. Every builder is fighting for the same pool of workers, and agencies are making a fortune off the scarcity. Entrenched labour hire firms (Construct Personnel, People 2U, Dash Group) are taking 20-40% margins. It's a bigger fight than Newcastle, but a bigger prize.

**Key data (from Radar intel):**
- $100B+ infrastructure pipeline across active projects
- 500,000 worker shortage nationally (Master Builders Australia)
- Trades/labourers shortages peak at 126,000 by mid-2027 (Infrastructure Australia)
- Industrial land take-up: ~330 hectares/year — nearly double Sydney's absorption rate
- Residential builders "cautious about hiring" (HIA) — not lack of demand, cost/regulatory pressure
- Developer sentiment cautiously re-engaging (Victorian Government 10-year industrial land plan)

**Key projects to reference:**
- Metro Tunnel ($12.58B, opening 2026) — "seven thousand jobs, and agencies are clipping the ticket on every one"
- Suburban Rail Loop (SRL East: Cheltenham to Box Hill, completion 2035) — decade of work
- Melbourne Airport Rail (construction commencing early 2026, completion 2030)
- North East Link (6.5km tunnels, completion 2028)
- West Gate Tunnel Project — active construction
- STH BNK by Beulah — Australia's tallest tower
- Massive housing pipeline (4,558+ units delivering 2026)

**Competitive landscape:** More competitive than Newcastle. Established labour hire: Construct Personnel (ex-tradies), People 2U, Dash Group, JV Recruitment. Plus HiPages, Airtasker, Yakka Labour. Need sharper positioning — target mid-size builders who can't afford Big 4 labour hire but need reliable workers.

**Local language:** The tunnel, Sunshine, SRL, out west, Footscray, Cheltenham, Box Hill, "down south", St Kilda

**Hostel angle:** St Kilda, Fitzroy, CBD — huge backpacker population, strong WHV job-seeking culture. Melbourne hostels often have dedicated employment boards.

**Sample hook:**
> "Melbourne's building a $12.58 billion tunnel. That's 7,000 jobs. And right now, agencies are taking 25% off every single one of those workers. That's not recruitment — that's a toll booth."

**Sample hook (data-driven):**
> "126,000 trade workers short by mid-2027. Suburban Rail Loop. Airport Rail. North East Link. West Gate Tunnel. Melbourne needs every tradie it can get — and agencies are still taking a quarter of their rate. $50. Once. That's the whole fee."

**Sample hook (worker-side):**
> "Melbourne. Metro Tunnel. Airport Rail. More work than workers. And some bloke in a recruitment office is keeping a quarter of your hourly rate for making one phone call. Not anymore. RateRight. $50 flat. You keep 100% of your rate."

---

## Messaging Rules — National Launch

1. **National announcement FIRST.** Lead with "All of Australia." Then follow with city-specific posts in subsequent weeks.
2. **Same voice, different street names.** Michael's tone doesn't change. The specifics do.
3. **City posts are follow-ups, not launches.** Melbourne, Newcastle, Brisbane etc. posts come Week 2+ as targeted content.
4. **Workers first in each city.** Every city gets worker-side AND builder-side messaging.
5. **Hostels are city-specific.** The email to a St Kilda hostel manager reads differently from one in Kings Cross.
6. **The "why national" story is the hook.** Word of mouth crosses state lines — that's the insight. Use it.
7. **Regional = included.** Don't just list capitals. "A regional town with a boom going on" makes everyone feel seen.

---

*The anger is the same everywhere. A tradie in Melbourne feels the same burn as one in Sydney when 25% of their rate disappears. We just name their street.*
